Plane Carrying Aviation Adventurer Steve Fossett Missing
Three search crews are in the air searching for the plane of aviation adventurer Steve Fossett, who disappeared after takeoff Monday night.
Fossett, 63, was last seen in a single engine plane heading south of Smith Valley, Nev., at a private airstrip, according to a report in the Record Courier.
Crews are looking for Fossett's blue and white plan, said Maj. Cynthia S. Ryan, a spokeswoman for Mission Civil Air Patrol.
The search area includes hundreds of square miles of rugged terrain and area airports are on alert for the missing plane.
Fossett made the first solo non-stop, non-refueled circumnavigation of the world in 67 hours. Fossett became the first person to fly solo around the world in a balloon in 2002.
