Backcountry group seeks volunteers for vigorous projects

Here’s a chance to give back in your area. If you live anywhere near these parks in Utah, give them a call. Or if you just like helping out and have the time, give them a call. Sounds like it might be fun and you could meet new people.

Utah Backcountry Volunteers, a nonprofit group aimed at improving the natural state of public lands, is looking for volunteers to work on service projects in 2008.

UBV works with various land-management agencies to identify projects and complete the work with volunteers. Projects range from trail maintenance to rehabilitation efforts to removing invasive species.

Service trips typically last seven days, with some three-day trips available. Each trip has room for 10 volunteer participants.

Much of the project work is considered "vigorous," which means volunteers need to be in good physical health and be prepared to work up a sweat. Camping is usually from a vehicle and in tents on backpacking trips. The cost is $200 for the weeklong trip and $100 for a three-day trip, which includes food.

Service trips this year include Zion National Park, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, the Wasatch-Cache National Forest, the Manti-LaSal National Forest, the Dixie National Forest, the Stansbury Mountains, Cedar Mesa/Grand Gulch Primitive Area and Capitol Reef National Park.
