I realize that fires are a part of nature and some are good for the land, but it is unfortunate when they are started deliberately and without regard or forethought of the consequences. When only one area in the world sustains a certain type of wildlife, it is sad indeed to think they could become extinct. Corie Marks, Staff Writer

Firefighters continue to gain the upper hand on a massive brush fire that's been burning inside Everglades National Park for more than a week. It is believed that the fire was started intentionally. The fire caused smoky skies over much of South Florida for several days straight but the smoky skies have cleared up a bit.
That's because the "Mustang Corner" fire, burning 10 miles northwest of Homestead, is now 70-percent contained. It has charred nearly 40,000 acres.
Both the Krome Detention Center and Everglades Correctional Institution were evacuated on Monday as a precautionary measure when the fire got a bit too close for comfort.
No structures were ever in danger, though officials say the fire is burning in the only known habitat for the endangered Cape Sable Seaside Sparrow.
