The issue of "The Money Follows the Ownership", though a natural condition for most situations, and one that Westerners are accustomed to, may not apply in this scenario and is a tricky one. Regardless of who "owns" or occupies the land, the real estate is still a natural history and national park treasure.

There exists today several special use situations where "squatters" have a real status for various reasons; some receive government funding and some don't.

Native Americans currently receive many financial benefits simply because of their heritage regardless of where they live. Others must live on a reservation in order to receive the benefits. It seems to be on a case by case basis.

I do wonder why they should get the government funding for it though if it will be under their control and not "for the people". If they want the land then they should have to take care of it on their own.

We spent several hours underground, exploring a small cave system that these spelunking pros were helping to map, located south of Nashville.

Our guides were the same cavers who had been called in to help explore and document the newly discovered mammoth cave system along the northern Mexican Pacific coast that is still being mapped as it travels several miles under the North American continent.

I helped them shoot and edit a couple of caving videos for a television release back then. My sense of adventure for caving ended when I started learning from my friends all of the rescue dives they'd been on to save people who had found themselves cut off from their return to daylight from unexpected water cascades rushing through the cave they were in.

That shows a much larger tree than Hyperion. One of the 2 largest Titans, also discovered by Sillett and Taylor, at Jedediah Smith Redwoods farther north.

Again, much larger than Hyperion, and probably much older too.

But Hyperion is the "tallest" redwood. The difference in mass between the largest - the Titans - and the tallest, is a lot.

Common sense says that the unpredictability of volcanoes forces us to sit up and take serious notice of any ramping up of activity. But, many in the scientific community are more led by politics than fact as can be seen by the way data has been handled in the recently debunked global warming hoax that tried to attach man's recent industrialization with such things as the 200 year old retreating glaciers. Certainly there are several factors that are pointing towards a shifting of water content back to the ocean, but that's been proven as a natural swing of the cosmic pendulum instead of a result of anything man has done.

This battle has always been there and was actually at a military level back when Yellowstone was first commissioned as a national park.

The first few thousand visitors were actually dissasembling Yellowstone one rock, formation and tree at a time as fires, vandalism and rock mining created permenant scars that are still there today. The federal gov't actually called in troops to protect the park. The troops became a permenant fixture in the park, even building barracks that are still in use today, but for much less of a military purpose.

I am sorry that you had to feel endangered, but please let me assure you that he had no intentions on harming anyone that day. Jeremy would never harm anyone. He was a kind and gentle person, unlike whoever commented above the article. I hope that you got your fix saying what you had to say. You would think that people could have the decency to keep such comments as that to themselves when a person dies. Especially on the internet where anyone including family could see such a comment. Jeremy loved nature and animals and people. He was a great person and he will be missed dearly by his famlily and friends. so now i would like you to think about what hurt you have caused me to feel. Try not to be so judgemental next time Mr. Marks.

It is true that they use it to improve and maintain the park facilities and roads. I thought I had read an article that stated that several parks had raised their fees already. That must have come before Washington gave their dictate. The parks would, however, have to realize that raised fees MAY keep some people from visiting the parks, but when you think of what people pay to go to theme parks, the nominal fees asked for at a National Park really don’t come close.

But have no worries, I'm sure the great folks at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center will keep a tight seal on William F. Cody's possessions for future visitors to admire and learn about the great lifestyle and achievements of 'Buffalo Bill'. And by the way this place is HUGE, considered to be The Smithsonian of the west!!

I spent mearly a month camped just outside of the park across form the Thunderbird and the fellow who owns the arena there was a real nice guy. I also met a Navajo by the name of Moe who lives just above the Antelope ruins where his family has lived for many years. I was fortunate enough to not only take the truck tour, but also Moe took me and my partner at the time on private horseback tour and we got to see and experience many of the things that tourist don't get to see. We furnished the horse. Some of the petroglyphs on the rocks there are prety astounding. Most are actually from the wodern era (after the return of the Navajo from the forced evacuation during the Indian Wars) but some show signs of being from the Anasasi period that was mentioned. The famous Spider Rock is cool to see. It stands in the middle of the split where the canyon goes in two direstions. You can look for Kokopelli while youre there too! He;s the little guys who is generally always playing the flute!

The Spanish were the first whites to venture into the canyon and they weren't so nice to the Navajo. I was told many tales of some things that kinda made me ashamed to be a white man, but hey that was then and I ain't that old, nor am I Spanish!

By the way. Most of the Indians don't actually live in the canyon, they live on the rim above the floor. One of the reasons (it is believed) that the dwellings were built in the cliffs was because that farming and grazing land is rare in the desert and by living up and away from the floor of the canyon more land is left available for growing crops and grazing livestock.

It is a very, very interesting place and I hope to return one day to visit with my friend Moe!

re: Park Officials I.D. Swimming near large falls has always been dangerous and it seems that parents no longer teach their children to always swim with a "buddy". My boy scout days taught me that. But, since it is no longer popular to be a boy scout, importanrt things like that don't get taught to our country's youngsters, let alone an apperant foreigner like this unfortunate individual. Nine million visitors a year and only six deaths. That ain't bad.

re: Rich history is unveiled at new Gold Rush park

I wonder why nothing in this article mentions the massive gold rush history located in Southern Oregon and Northern California. Since this new park covers tens of thousands of miles of history and even has a "sister park" away up north in Alaska, it seems a simple link of intelligence to connect the rest of the dots, or at least mention in this news story why the dodts are NOT being connected.

Jacksonville, Oregon near Medford has for ever been a center of the gold rush scene on the west coast. It was even chosen for a movie site as Cliff Robertson's The Great Northfield Minnesota Raid was filmed there back in the 1970s because of its authentic western architecture that has been maintained thorughout its history.

re: Congressional support critical for Glacier, local economy

This is a problem in all national parks. It may be unrealistic to expect the federal government to continue to provide adequate funding for the park system. If they can not, they would be better off allowing easier private funding for the parks. As it stands now, the rules are extensive for fund raisers for the national parks and the park services have to be careful how they recieve or obtain funds from groups other than government funding. I think a lot of people wouldn't mind donating money to the individual parks if the government would lighten up on their restrictions of this type of park funding and the parks would find themselves a lot better off financially.

re: Graffiti cleaned up at national park

I boldly suggest that if you witness some one perpetrating graffiti on national park monuments that you take action immediately. Maybe you don't need to perform a "citizen's arrest" like Gomer Pyle, but there's a good chance that if you are visiting a national park or monument that you are carrying a camera of some sort. If we could help our parks prosecute such acts, and publicize such prosecutions, then we could go a long way towards curbing this juvenile behavior. I think that we should do more than just educate. Maybe a few months in prison, or a few thousand dollars out of pocket might warn these juvenile delinquents that there is a price to pay for robbing Americans of their protected natural resources. We pay through the nose in federal taxes; let’s put some teeth to our taxes!

This guy thinks he can just do whatever the "spirit moves him" to do regardless of laws and preservation! He may have slipped through a loop-hole in the park regulations, but he KNEW it was wrong or he wouldn't have been out there in the middle of the night rehearsing it and then filming it at the crack of dawn. I don't think he should be cut any slack!
