As a teenager, I remember seeing my first motorcycle ice race on TV.
It took me a few minutes to figure out how they were doing it. Before even seeing a close-up of the tires, or hearing the announcer mention anything about spikes, I realized that there was something different about the gear they were using. I was rather perceptive of this issue at that time because the same Christmas, I had received one of the larger gifts to date; a brand new bicycle.
Short version; December, Oregon, teenager, new bike, snow.
Needless to say, after several hard landings on even harder asphalt, I was destined to have nothing more to do with my new, green Schwinn, except dream about it, until spring thaw.
That was over thirty years ago, and now ice racing has reached several different modes including bicycles.
