Mines of Spain State Recreation Area

Preview: Mines of Spain State Recreation Area, located on the bluffs overlooking Catfish Creek and the Mississippi River, encompasses Catfish Creek State Preserve and the Julien Dubuque Monument (on the National Register of Historic Places). Steeped in cultural history, Mines of Spain SRA is situated in an area that has been inhabited for at least the past 8,000 years. It was also the site of the first Euro-American settlement in Iowa and the beginning of river town Dubuque. A short jaunt around the E.B. Lyons Interpretive Center’s trails or a 15-mile day, over bluff and down valley can be enjoyed within the gorgeous park.

This sounds like a neat place and close enough that we could visit it in a day.
