Preview: The Allegheny Front Trail (AFT) is a scenic loop that is quickly gaining popularity among both dayhikers and backpackers. This trail offers a lot of great scenery, nice campsites, vistas, and scenic streams. It is conveniently located in the center of the state and is close to I-80, making the trail a reasonable drive for backpackers from Ohio, New York, New Jersey, or Maryland. Terrain: Generally flat or rolling, with gradual descents and ascents. A few climbs can be steep and rocky, but are typically short. Significant amount of sidehills along Sixmile Run, Allegheny Front, and Moshannon Creek. Trail conditions: Trail is generally well blazed and maintained, although brushy in sections. Highlights: Vistas of Moshannon Creek, vistas from Allegheny Front, Sixmile Run, Benner Run, wetlands, Moshannon Creek, Black Moshannon Creek, Black Moshannon State Park, Wolf Rocks, scenic mountain streams, and wildlife.
