Evans Notch—Blueberry Mountain Loop Trail; Maine

In choosing trails for our weekly posts, I try to find some sort of interesting distinction to make each trail of some significance; not just another hike on the long list. The distinction for this trail is that it is among the most northern in the entire US; being laterally adjacent with the Puget Sound on the west coast.

There are a small handful of such trails, but this one is on a national sea shore and that makes it special.

Preview: A loop hike across Blueberry Mountain’s impressive ledges with a side trip to a beautiful flume and pool. Evans Notch is probably the best-kept secret in the White Mountain National Forest. Though often overshadowed by better-known notches in New Hampshire, Evans has some of the finest hiking and most spectacular views throughout the region, and, during fall, is simply unsurpassed for sheer beauty. This loop explores the southern end of the notch, just up the road from the AMC’s Cold River Camp, and is a great hike for first-time visitors to the area.
