In a recent issue of Backpacker, FAA specialist Dennis Juenemann explains the ins and outs of packing away or carrying on your camp stove gear.
Stoves; Only new stoves in original packaging are always allowed onboard or in checked luggage. It is possible to scrub out a used stove to the point that the “sniffers” wouldn’t detect fuel and burn residues, but it isn’t easy. Backpacker staff commonly ships gear to outdoor stores near their destination ahead of time.
Fuel; No containers containing fuel is allowed under any circumstance. Scrubbed canisters or new ones are allowed. Pack them near the surface of carry-ons for easy inspection. Buy fuel at your destination.
As of Aug 2007, butane lighters are allowed in carry-ons, as well as one box of matches, but, never in checked luggage.
Batteries; Spare lithium metel batteries are not allowed in carry-ons, only checked baggage. All other common batteries are allowed in both. Check your equipment’s batteries for type.
Liquids; The 4 oz limit is still in effect, so bear sprays don’t make the allowable list in any form. Ship them ahead of time or buy them there.
