May 2004. The Goose Neck of the Colorado River in Canyonlands N.P., south of Moab, Utah. The trail at the bottom of the photo runs along the floor of the canyon, roughly from Moab, past Dead Horse Point State Park, and later on, ends up at the top of the Grand Overlook in Canyonlands N.P. after zig-zagging up the escarpment, motly in a one-lane path on which jeeps often barely fit. At this point, we are overlooking about the half way point of the jeep trail. Moab is further to the left, and trail's end in Canyonlands is towards the right.
The average elevation difference between the highest plateaus and the river level is roughly 2,000 feet. Both the green river and the Colorado are not necessarily the clearest and cleanest looking rivers. But, many raft, tube and kayak down these rivers for sport.
This area of the Colorado is where the Green River joins it on the way to the Gulf of California in the Pacific.
